PC PAL
WHAT WE DO/focused on applications for the medical sector

Established in 1991 PC PAL is a software house specialising in the development of bespoke database applications for the pharmaceutical, private and public health care sectors. With systems in over 40 countries we are experienced in:

We have developed applications in Endocrinology, Genetics, Oncology Late Effects and Ophthalmology. The specific disease areas of Growth deficiency and Acromegaly; well known syndromes such as Down, Turner and Noonan; plus rare diagnoses including Fabry and Hunter Syndrome; and complex conditions such as Glaucoma requiring life-long management.

How we do it

A Health Informatics methodology is followed focussing on the needs and wants of not only hands-on users but also others who need information captured in the dataset. Discussion with the groups who will use output from the system leads to a User Requirement Specification describing what functionality would be valued, the data collection flow of current real world processes with desired enhancements, and the existing IT infrastructure.

The satisfaction of User Output Requirements is critical to the acceptability of the application and central to the design process. The statistical analyses, calculated variables, graphic presentations, reports, and electronic or printed auto-generated messages (letters) that derive from the input data, determine what variables to record and the appropriate scales to use. Combining what is to be recorded with descriptions of the data collection processes guides how the input screens and navigation within the application are organised. Working in this way ensures that the time spent inputting data is minimised and that hands-on users find the application easy to learn and work with.

Having defined the possible scope of the system, further consultation with the sponsor evaluates the trade-off between satisfying user wants, the desired delivery date, and cost. This establishes what will be included to achieve the sponsor’s aims within the resources available. We believe these ongoing dialogues drawing on the knowledge and experience of everyone involved, as crucial to achieving the best product possible.

From the approved User Requirement document, a Functional Design manuscript is written. This describes in detail what the system must do to satisfy users’ needs and in turn leads to a Technical Design Specification documenting the programming structures and techniques which will be implemented in the software to move from concepts and wishes to a fully functioning application.
